The Loss of Relationships

Healing from narcissistic abuse initially feels like hauling off boulders of emotional pain and heaving stones of despair over the fence. For believers, this focused work fits under the broader umbrella of becoming more like Christ, i.e. sanctification.

everyone deserted me….

2 Timothy 4:16

After redefining my relationship with the narcissist, I noticed a shuffling within my friendships. Some drew closer. Others mysteriously distanced themselves. The mystery resolved when I discovered what the narcissist had communicated to our mutual friends.

I have no control over how the narcissist portrays me nor the stories they share. Some will believe the narcissist’s tales of betrayal and suffering that garner him sympathy and support.

I had to radically accept that some relationships might change because of misinformation. Though I thought I had prepared for this loss, resolution required the emotional work of feeling the pain, grieving the loss, and spending time in God’s Word.

The Apostle Paul wrote about abandonment during his defense before Roman authorities. Imagine Paul’s response to surveying the gathering and failing to see his partners-in-ministry supporting him. His response modeled a healing direction for my heart:

At my first defense, no one came to my support,

but everyone deserted me.

May it not be held against them.

But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength….

The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack

and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom.

To him be glory forever. Amen

2 Timothy 4:16-17,18*

Father, thank You that Your Word is living and active and a light for my path. Thank You for showing me Paul’s compassionate response to abandonment. Create within me the same release You created within Paul. Thank You for standing with me and providing strength. I ask that the actions of those who have distanced themselves from me not be held against them. Thank You that You can and will redeem these losses in my life. To You be the glory for ever and ever. Amen.
